Oblivion Remastered Still Faces Issues Without Updates Since 2025
A year after launch, the remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion still suffers from performance problems, with no patches since July 2025.

The remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion continues to face technical issues that impact gameplay, despite its commercial success. Digital Foundry, which initially highlighted problems like frame drops, stuttering, and possible memory leaks last May, revisited the game and found many of those issues still remain.
"Since the 1.2 update in July 2025, the game has not received any patches on PC, reflecting very limited post-launch support," Digital Foundry explained. "This leaves the game in a state that can range from 'annoying' to 'practically unplayable,' depending on how much players tolerate persistent stutters, crashes, and other severe bugs."
The analysis points to the game's original architecture, built on Unreal Engine 5, being very demanding on CPU and GPU resources. This results in unstable frame times that worsen over extended play sessions. The lack of updates suggests Bethesda did not see feasible improvements, which has disappointed many players.
The game holds a 'mostly positive' review rating on Steam, but recent reviews are mixed, with some players calling it "abandonware" due to bugs and performance issues. One negative review from April states: "The last updates only worsened performance, even on the main menu. It's unfortunate I can't get a refund after playing over 100 hours."
Despite these setbacks, Oblivion Remastered has been a commercial success for Bethesda, which hired Virtuos to help remake the beloved RPG using Unreal Engine 5. The game has been played by over 9 million users, and Todd Howard, Bethesda's director, expressed in December that they were "really pleased" with its performance. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version in 2026 might be the chance for an update to fix these ongoing issues.
