Global Solar Growth Reaches Record High in 2025
The International Energy Agency confirms that 2025 was the year solar energy took the lead worldwide, marking a major shift in the energy landscape.

On Monday, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released its analysis of global energy trends for 2025. The report confirms and expands on a previous finding from the International Renewable Energy Agency: 2025 was the year solar energy began to dominate the energy mix worldwide.
The surge in solar production was a key factor in the growth of carbon-free energy sources surpassing rising demand. The report also highlights massive growth in battery storage and relatively stagnant fossil fuel use, leading the IEA to declare that “the world has entered the Age of Electricity.”
The analysis covers various energy uses, including the electrical grid, transportation, and home heating. It shows a global trend: electricity demand grew at twice the rate of overall energy consumption. This indicates a shift toward electric vehicles and heat pumps replacing gas and oil heating in many regions.
Overall, the transition to a cleaner, more electrified energy system is accelerating, with solar energy playing a leading role in 2025.
