Spotify Rolls Out Artist Profile Protection to Combat AI-Generated Fake Releases
Spotify is testing a new feature, 'Artist Profile Protection,' that allows artists to review releases before they go live, offering a safeguard against imposters and AI-generated fake tracks appearing on their profiles.

Spotify is proactively addressing a growing threat: the creation of songs using artificial intelligence. The platform is in beta testing a new feature called ‘Artist Profile Protection’ that gives artists final control over the songs published on their profile.
The need for this feature stems from several issues. Metadata mix-ups and similar names have previously led to incorrect song releases on other artists’ profiles. However, this problem has escalated significantly with the rise of imitators and, increasingly, songs generated by artificial intelligence. Artists such as Drake and Beyoncé, alongside experimental composers like William Basinski and indie rock bands like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, have been victims of these fakes.
Reports indicate that numerous songs, some clearly AI-generated, have appeared under the names of these artists on streaming platforms. This situation has raised concerns within the music industry and highlighted the difficulty of detecting and removing false content in such a vast streaming environment. ‘Artist Profile Protection’ aims to provide an additional layer of security, allowing artists to verify and approve songs before they go public, mitigating the impact of these fakes.
