Michael hits theaters on April 24, but its release raises questions about whether it truly captures the essence of the legendary artist. In a time when pop-star biopics often follow a predictable pattern, this film fails to stand out. Covering from the Jackson 5 days in the 1960s to the 1980s, it tries to stick to the facts but ends up superficial and soulless.

The movie underwent significant rewrites after Jackson’s estate intervened, removing allegations of child abuse and court cases from the script. This resulted in an incomplete story that loses its initial dramatic impact. Instead of exploring Jackson’s personality or controversies, it focuses on milestones, making it feel flat and unengaging.

Starting with a scene in the 1980s where only Jackson’s shoes are visible, the narrative moves back to the 1960s, depicting the formation of the Jackson 5. Juliano Krue Valdi’s portrayal of young Jackson is heartfelt, but Colman Domingo’s depiction of Joe Jackson, with exaggerated prosthetics, distracts and feels forced. The film attempts to show family dynamics but falls into clichés and rigid storytelling.

Ultimately, Michael fails to offer a meaningful insight into Jackson’s life or legacy. The omission of key controversies and personal aspects leaves the film superficial, lacking the impact expected from a story about one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
