Sung Kang Unveils "Drifter," His Directorial Debut
The "Fast & Furious" actor not only directs and writes the film but also stars in this story of overcoming challenges within the drifting world.

Sung Kang, the actor widely recognized for his iconic role in the Fast & Furious films, debuted the trailer for "Drifter," his highly anticipated directorial debut. The film sees him return to the driver's seat, but this time with a much deeper creative vision, as Kang also penned the screenplay for this new cinematic endeavor.
In "Drifter," Kang stars as Tree, a janitor at a racetrack whose innate gift for drifting was long suppressed. The plot follows Tree as he is given a single chance to compete at a professional drifting event. Simultaneously, he must navigate a tragic past that has created significant barriers in his life, exploring themes of redemption and second chances.
Kang described Tree as "a person who lives in the shadows, who has no voice, who has no place on this Earth." This description highlights the character's journey to find his purpose and a sense of belonging within a community, a relatable struggle for many viewers.
Kang explained a major goal of his with the film was to create a love letter to the car community, saying he felt "traditionally, films have not respected the car community in the way I see the car community."
The actor, no stranger to onscreen car action, aims with "Drifter" to honor car enthusiasts in a way he believes is rarely seen in cinema. This involves showcasing the passion, dedication, and camaraderie that exist within this world, moving beyond mere spectacular chases. The film promises a more intimate and authentic look at drifting culture, valuing its protagonists and their machines.
Despite his deep connection to the character of Han in Fast & Furious —a role that, interestingly, originated in the unrelated 2003 film Better Luck Tomorrow, directed by Justin Lin before being brought into the Fast series with The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift— Kang clarified that he was never tempted to make the lead character in "Drifter" also Han. "I wanted to keep it separate," he stated. For him, while being part of the Fast franchise has been a blessing, his current interest lies in telling stories that are "so authentic to the community around me," marking a clear distinction between his acting work and his directorial vision.
This decision to craft an original character for "Drifter" underscores Kang's desire to explore fresh narratives and leave his own creative imprint. It's not about replicating Han's success but about building a new, personal story that resonates with a specific audience—the car community—which he feels cinema often fails to fully appreciate.
Reflecting on the "Justice for Han" phenomenon, Kang shared that he truly thought his time as Han was over. However, he noted that "the beauty of franchise like Fast is it is made by the audience and for the audience," pointing out that the people wanted him back and Universal heard them. This episode not only highlights the power of the fan base in steering major film productions but also demonstrates how public sentiment can directly influence studio decisions.
With "Drifter," Sung Kang not only makes his directorial debut but also offers a personal perspective and a dedication to a community he deeply values. The project represents an evolution in his career, allowing him to tell stories from a position of complete creative control, which promises a unique cinematic experience for motor enthusiasts and fans of underdog narratives.
"Drifter" is expected to open later this year, marking a significant milestone in Sung Kang's multifaceted career and offering a fresh take on the world of speed and automotive passion.
