Meta Launches Muse Image, its Generative AI with Public Profile Access
Meta's Superintelligence Labs division introduced Muse Image, a model that creates and edits photos using text or images from public Instagram and WhatsApp profiles, marking a key step in content personalization.

Meta’s Superintelligence Labs division has officially launched Muse Image, its inaugural generative AI image model, now rolling out across Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Meta AI app. This innovative tool empowers users to generate pictures from text prompts, utilize photos from their own public profiles, or even leverage images from anyone else’s public profile. It also offers robust photo editing capabilities.
A standout feature of Muse Image is its ability to draw upon existing visual content. Users can create imaginative scenarios, such as a “Big Sur – Aug ‘83.” road trip that never actually happened, or a vibrant “colorful geometric suit stands by abstract shapes,” by referencing images from public profiles.
“Muse Image acts as the creative partner that knows your world, making it easy to turn your ideas into high-quality visuals that you can download and share anywhere, including directly to your feed, story, or chat,” Meta states in a blog post.
Meta positions Muse Image as a “creative partner that knows your world.” The company aims to simplify the process of transforming ideas into high-quality visuals, which users can then download and share seamlessly, whether directly to their feed, story, or chat. This deep integration with Meta's platforms promises a fluid and highly personalized user experience.
The array of creative possibilities is vast, as demonstrated by Meta's launch examples. Prompts include reimagining a photo as a “perfect editorial film photograph” or transforming a subject into an “appealing claymation character” while retaining their likeness. Users can even request to be “reimagined as a dog,” with the AI selecting a breed that matches their facial features, expression, and overall “vibe.”
Further creative applications span from generating a candid photo of a “grandmother teaching her granddaughter how to make pasta” in a cozy, sunlit kitchen, to crafting an “iconic poster featuring me in a wide shot composite, in the story of my life/career,” based on connected Meta accounts and interests. The AI can also place a user “on a vintage TV from a bygone era,” performing an activity related to their interests or job.
Muse Image introduces a compelling social dimension by allowing users to @-mention specific Instagram accounts to co-create AI images. Meta illustrates this with an AI-generated birthday image, highlighting new avenues for personalized social content and interaction that previously required advanced editing skills.
Recognizing privacy concerns, Meta has implemented a clear opt-out mechanism. Users who prefer not to have their likeness used in AI-generated images can disable this feature by navigating to “Sharing and reuse” in the Instagram menu and toggling off “Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta.”
Beyond image generation, Muse Image can also be used to edit existing photos, offering 30 new AI-powered effects available in Instagram Stories. This means users have more tools to customize and enhance their posts directly within the application, fostering greater creativity.
While Muse Image is offered free for “everyday creation,” heavy users may eventually require a Meta AI subscription. The service is currently rolling out in the U.S., with plans for broader international availability soon, suggesting a phased global adoption.
This launch signifies Meta's strong commitment to the generative AI space, emphasizing social integration and user personalization. The company is also actively developing Muse Video, indicating an ambitious expansion into the realm of AI-powered video content generation and a long-term vision for its AI tools.
