Valve and its SteamOS operating system have achieved something many companies, including Apple, have tried for decades: reducing Windows' dominance in PC gaming.

According to Valve’s own stats, Windows still leads with over 92 percent of PCs in the Steam Hardware Survey running some version of Windows. But five years ago, that number was above 96 percent, and ten years ago, just under 96 percent.

Since then, Linux has gained ground, rising from under 1 percent to over 5 percent in market share. While these figures are still small, they mark a significant shift compared to the past.

Valve achieved this by making Windows games run on Linux, instead of pushing developers to create native Linux ports. This organic growth through community support and word-of-mouth has helped Linux gain traction in gaming, something Valve couldn't accomplish in the early 2010s when it directly challenged Windows.

This trend change could give Valve more time to compete in a market still largely controlled by Microsoft. It also shows that compatibility and open strategies can be effective in expanding Linux’s presence in PC gaming.
