Xbox Layoffs Impact The Elder Scrolls 6 Development
Over 50 Bethesda Game Studios employees were laid off, raising concerns about delays and team morale for the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6, according to reports to IGN.

More than 50 key staff members at Bethesda Game Studios have been laid off, sources told IGN, sparking significant concern for the future development of The Elder Scrolls 6, the long-awaited successor to Skyrim. These job losses, including "key, high-performing people in the trenches," are already shattering team morale and increasing the risk of further development crunch and delays.
These layoffs are part of a broader restructuring across Xbox, which saw 1,600 staff lose their jobs this week. Newly installed CEO Asha Sharma described it as the "most significant" restructure in Xbox history, stating that Microsoft's gaming business "is not healthy." Overall, Xbox is losing about one-fifth of its staff as part of Sharma's push for growth.
The depth of feeling among the tight-knit Bethesda team is evident. In offices in Dallas, Texas, and Rockville, Maryland, makeshift "Celebrations of Service" memorials, featuring framed photographs of laid-off workers alongside bouquets of flowers, were shared on social media. However, at least one of these displays has since been dismantled under orders from the company's HR department.
"Their loss will have a substantial and cascading effect on the game and morale of this studio," one Bethesda staff member told IGN.
The cuts affected a mix of disciplines, including programmers, artists, and designers. One individual who had been with the company since Morrowind was also let go. A growing fear among "survivors" is that experienced talent will be replaced by cheaper, contracted labor.
The concerns for The Elder Scrolls 6 are very real. "We were already running a tight ship and are worried about this delaying the game," another staff member stated. The game, announced eight years ago, is still at least two years away from launch, having already skipped one full console generation for mainline releases.
Bethesda boss Jill Braff, in an internal email to staff, asserted that the changes "reflect the realities of our industry and business," aiming for a "more stable foundation." She added that to be successful, Bethesda must "strengthen our business, return to sustainable growth, and ensure we can continue investing in our franchises and our players."
The impact of the cuts extends beyond Bethesda Game Studios. ZeniMax Online Studios, developer of The Elder Scrolls Online, has already signaled content roadmap changes due to reduced staff. id Software, creators of the Doom games, suffered significant cuts, with 136 out of 185 full-time employees laid off, according to Game Developer. Additionally, Obsidian Entertainment laid off a quarter of its staff and is now working on a new Fallout game, with Bethesda assisting.
The situation has reignited discussions about unionization. "I think the specter of layoffs is something we will face in perpetuity until we unionize," a Bethesda staff member commented. While "survivors" were told they are safe from this year's additional 1,600 cuts, deep concern about future downsizing persists.
The overall sentiment points to an uncertain career path in the gaming industry. "You don't get to retire off your work at Xbox. Your time ends when you quit or are laid off, that's it," a laid-off staff member concluded, reflecting the stark reality of job instability.
