Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Launch DLC Controversy on Steam
Ubisoft's classic re-release sparked debate on Steam due to the amount of optional paid content available on day one, despite positive reviews and player records.

The $85 worth of optional extras for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, added to its $60 base price, ignited controversy on Steam since its launch on July 9, 2026. Despite positive reviews from critics, fans expressed scathing feedback on the game's Steam store page regarding the array of $10 cosmetic packs and a $5 map pack add-on available on day one.
While this practice is not entirely unusual for an Assassin's Creed game, the sheer number of paid content offered at launch and its total pricing has drawn significant ire. The gaming community feels that the initial price does not cover a complete experience, forcing them to spend much more to access everything.
Ubisoft responded to the backlash, reminding players that such add-ons are not vital for enjoying the game. A Ubisoft community spokesperson on Steam stated clearly: "We want to be clear on one point: the standard edition is the full, complete experience. Every mission, every island, the full story and the complete world are all there, with nothing held back. The additional packs are entirely optional extras for players who want them, never a requirement to enjoy or complete the game. We'll keep listening as you play!".

Among the downloadable content packs available at launch are the "Master Assassin Character Pack," "Master Assassin Naval Pack," "Hellfire Character Pack," "Hellfire Naval Pack," "Sea Serpent Character Pack," "Sea Serpent Naval Pack," "Dragon Storm Character Pack," "Dragon Storm Naval Pack," and the "Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced - Map Pack." Each character and naval pack is priced at $10, offering an additional costume for hero Edward Kenway or a new cosmetic look for his ship, the Jackdaw. The $5 map pack provides a time-saving feature by highlighting all collectibles without requiring manual discovery.
Beyond the microtransaction discussion, Ubisoft's expanded and polished-up take on its pirate adventure classic has been praised for bringing the game up to modern standards. The ground-up remake has also brought notable visual upgrades, replacing its multiplayer and modern-day portions with additional missions and story scenes set in the Caribbean.
In fact, the game's sales performance is also remarkable. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced recently smashed the franchise's Steam concurrent player record, reaching a peak of around 100,000 users. This figure is over a third more than the peak for the highly anticipated feudal Japan blockbuster, "Assassin's Creed Shadows."
Specialized critics have also welcomed the title. IGN, for example, awarded it a 9/10 rating in their Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced review. They described the game as "more than just a shinier version of the same game you remember," highlighting how it brings one of the best games in the series up to today’s standards.
This success in critical and player reception, with IGN awarding it a 9/10 and a record of 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, demonstrates that the quality of the base game can, at times, prevail over frustration with launch microtransactions.
