Microsoft is advancing a major upgrade to Microsoft 365 Copilot: an AI assistant capable of operating autonomously 24 hours a day. The goal is to manage emails, calendars, and administrative tasks without constant user input. This shift aims to redefine productivity in corporate settings. The company wants Copilot to move from reactive to proactive, acting on behalf of users with minimal supervision.

The system relies on specialized AI agents focused on specific functions, like email management in Outlook or calendar updates. Each agent will have restricted access, limited to only the environment needed to perform its task. This architecture reduces data exposure risks. Unlike solutions such as OpenClaw, which allow broad system access, Microsoft prioritizes function isolation to protect sensitive information.

According to Omar Shahine, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft, the company is developing "safer" versions of AI so Copilot can operate autonomously around the clock. "Functioning autonomously 24 hours" is the core focus of current development. Running these agents locally on devices reduces reliance on the cloud. That lowers the attack surface for potential cyber threats.

Agents could expand beyond email and scheduling. Microsoft envisions their use in areas like sales, marketing, and accounting. Each will operate under strict permissions, monitoring inputs, suggesting actions, and executing routine tasks. Autonomy does not mean unrestricted freedom, but controlled, focused operation. This approach maintains privacy and prevents a breach in one module from affecting the entire system.

This strategy strengthens trust in AI within organizations. Businesses need powerful tools that don’t compromise security. Microsoft is betting on a balance between automation and control. Integrating autonomous AI into Office 365 could transform daily work management.
