Humanoid Robots Deployed in US Schools as Teacher Assistants
A pilot program in the Salamanca City Central school district will integrate Realbotix's M-Series robots and Optio AI assistant to enhance student engagement.

Approximately 500 high school students in the United States are set to benefit from an innovative pilot program that, by autumn 2026, will introduce humanoid robots as teaching assistants in a school district, as announced by Realbotix. This initiative aims to boost student participation and AI-assisted learning, marking a significant step in integrating advanced technology into education.
Realbotix has unveiled its AI-powered teaching assistant, named Optio, alongside the M-Series humanoid robot. This initial deployment is taking place in the Salamanca City Central school district, reflecting a growing trend of artificial intelligence integration in US education. The project combines virtual tutoring software with the physical presence of humanoid robots in academic settings.
Optio functions as an AI-driven teaching assistant and a personalized after-hours tutor. Students can interact with digital avatars trained on content approved by the school district. This system offers conceptual reinforcement, individualized tutoring, homework assistance in multiple languages, and continuous academic support, available 24/7.
According to Realbotix, the Optio platform includes specific security controls for the educational environment, ensuring district oversight and mechanisms to prevent inappropriate responses. Furthermore, its design caters to neurodiverse students, providing personalized learning paths and continuous access to adapted educational resources tailored to their needs.
The pilot program will initially be implemented with students enrolled in Woz ED AI and robotics courses, highlighting Salamanca's status as a STEM educational district. This program seeks to transform interaction with robots into an everyday experience, moving beyond the confines of laboratories and experimental demonstrations.
"We are moving beyond lab demonstrations to bring embodied AI directly into classrooms, supporting teachers and demonstrating that advanced robotics can thrive in real educational settings," stated Andrew Kiguel, CEO of Realbotix.
The M-Series robot is designed for direct, in-person contact with students. It combines natural language processing, expressive facial movements, and real-time conversational skills. It can answer questions, participate in debates, and deliver educational content through spoken dialogue, allowing students to interact with embodied artificial intelligence rather than solely through traditional screens.
The incorporation of facial expressions and reactive dialogue aims to create a more immersive and engaging experience for students. The robot will be used in conjunction with Woz ED courses, enabling students to explore how advanced AI systems perceive, process, and respond to human interaction, offering a practical understanding of these technologies.
This initiative intends not only to improve classroom dynamics but also to help students understand emerging technologies that are expected to have a growing impact across various sectors. The program serves as a practical demonstration of embodied artificial intelligence, showcasing how humanoid robots can collaborate in educational environments and anticipating future applications in diverse learning areas.
The planned expansion of this program to nearly 500 students by autumn 2026 underscores a vision to integrate advanced robotics into daily education, shifting technology interaction from lab demonstrations to a fundamental pedagogical tool within the STEM curriculum.
