Gemini Powers Gmail for Conversational Inbox Search on Mobile
Google unveiled Gmail Live at its I/O 2026 conference, a feature allowing users to interact with their inbox using natural language, thanks to Gemini's AI.

At its I/O 2026 developer conference, Google announced a new Gmail feature, powered by Gemini, that will allow users to interact with their inbox using natural language. This innovation, named Gmail Live, is set to transform how users access information within their emails.
Gmail Live utilizes conversational artificial intelligence to answer questions about email content, making it easier to find information without needing to type specific terms into the search bar. For daily Gmail users, this signifies a much more fluid and direct interaction with their personal and professional data.
Until now, finding specific data in Gmail required entering keywords, email addresses, or domains, a process that could often be imprecise if the information was spread across multiple messages. With Gmail Live, users will be able to verbally ask specific questions.
With Gmail Live, users will be able to verbally ask questions such as the time of an upcoming flight, the date of a medical appointment, or the access code for a reserved accommodation.
The system understands natural language queries, responds to follow-up questions, and switches topics as needed by the user. Devanshi Bhandari, Gmail Product Lead, explained that this function allows for a conversation with the inbox, similar to the experience with virtual assistants.
During the demonstration at Google I/O 2026, Gmail Live showcased a remarkable ability to distinguish nuances between similar terms and extract precise details. For instance, it could identify a hotel room number, even when that information was not literally mentioned in the user's question.
The integration of Gemini aims to offer significant practical value, providing direct answers about email content, according to Google. This application of artificial intelligence seeks to simplify one of the most frequent and often frustrating tasks: locating specific information among hundreds or thousands of emails.
Google clarified that Gmail Live will not replace traditional search but will function as an additional tool. This decision aligns with the company's strategy of maintaining classic methods as an alternative, even when incorporating AI-powered searches into other products.
In addition to the conversational feature, Gmail will gain other capabilities. These include ready-to-send drafts, instant file access, and the ability to manage task lists by marking each pending item as completed. Gemini's voice function will also extend to other ecosystem applications, such as Google Keep, to facilitate daily task management with spoken commands.
The AI Inbox service, launched this year, will expand to include Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers, in addition to Google AI Ultra users. This tool allows for a single-page summary of tasks and pending items that remain scattered across the inbox, centralizing key information.
Gmail Live is scheduled to be available starting mid-year, initially exclusively for Google AI Ultra subscribers. Google will evaluate its expansion to other subscription tiers based on user feedback and service evolution, marking a significant step in how we interact with our inboxes.
