If you use WhatsApp to connect with new people or join groups, this update is going to make a big difference for you. WhatsApp is adding usernames, a significant step to let people start conversations without sharing their phone numbers, expanding its privacy tools ahead of a wider rollout later in 2026.

This feature marks a crucial shift in how we connect. Users will now be able to share a WhatsApp username instead of their phone number, making it easier to link up with a new classmate, neighbor, or someone met at an event, all while keeping sensitive personal information private.

Privacy extends to group interactions too. Usernames allow individuals to join community or parent group chats without their phone number being visible to everyone in the conversation. Crucially, these usernames don't have to match a person's identity on other platforms.

WhatsApp opened username reservations on June 29. The company has stated it won't create a public username directory or suggest accounts to other users, emphasizing a focus on private connections over public discovery.

To initiate contact for the first time, users will need to know an exact username. This requirement ensures that conversations remain focused on private connections rather than facilitating broad public discovery, reinforcing WhatsApp's privacy-first approach.

The early opening of reservations, well before the full feature launch later in 2026, is a strategic move. With over three billion people using WhatsApp, competition for desirable usernames is likely, and this early access gives users a chance to claim their preferred handle.

The rollout of reservations will be gradual over the coming months. WhatsApp confirmed that users will receive an in-app notification when they become eligible to reserve a username. Furthermore, an optional "username key" will be introduced, requiring new contacts to know both the username and this key to begin a conversation.

Once usernames are fully available, first-time conversations initiated through a username will not reveal the recipient's phone number. WhatsApp will also include a built-in username generator, assisting users who might need help finding an available name.

For businesses, creators, and organizations, a key benefit is the ability to reserve the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook. This consistency helps maintain a unified identity across Meta's applications. Reserving a username is straightforward: open the latest WhatsApp version, navigate to "Settings," then "Account," and finally "Username." The process takes just a few seconds. This initiative reinforces WhatsApp's commitment to user privacy, providing an essential layer of security for its more than three billion users before the full feature deployment later in 2026.
