Amazon Confirms New Lord of the Rings Game
The company states it's exploring a new playable experience inspired by Tolkien's work, while the ambitious massively multiplayer online project is shelved.

Amazon Games has confirmed it is continuing to work on a new and promising game experience set in the world of "The Lord of the Rings." This news follows the cancellation of its ambitious massively multiplayer online (MMO) game project based on J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic intellectual property.
Jeff Grattis, head of Amazon Games, told Eurogamer that the creative team is focused on developing an experience that faithfully honors Tolkien's world. The company maintains close collaboration with the IP rights holders and expresses excitement for the franchise's future in gaming.
This announcement comes amid a restructuring within Amazon Games, which included significant layoffs. Eurogamer's investigation revealed that the MMO's cancellation is part of the company's strategy to explore generative artificial intelligence, impacting several development teams.
The "Lord of the Rings" MMO project had been announced previously, generating great anticipation among fans. However, development faced challenges, including contractual disputes and the need to find an innovative approach to differentiate it from other existing market offerings.
The rights to "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" are held by Embracer, which has stated its intention to significantly exploit the franchise in the video game industry. The acquisition of these rights in August 2022 opened the door for new opportunities to create diverse content.
While the MMO is now in the past, the mention of "a new game experience" suggests Amazon might be exploring other genres. Speculation points towards a potential RPG, given that Embracer also owns Warhorse Studios, the developers of "Kingdom Come: Deliverance."
This is not the first time Amazon has canceled a "Lord of the Rings" MMO project. In 2021, the company had already halted development on another similar title due to contractual issues with Tencent.
The rich history of "The Lord of the Rings" video game adaptations spans decades, from text adventures to strategy titles and RPGs. The current focus is on how Amazon Games will approach this new project to capture the essence of Tolkien's world.
