Unitree, well known for its humanoid robots, has announced the GD01, a massive transformable mech that can switch between walking on two legs and four. The company describes it as "the world’s first production-ready manned mecha" and showcases it in videos performing tasks like breaking through cinderblock walls and changing modes. While its exact purpose isn’t specified, the visuals suggest potential civilian or entertainment uses.

The GD01 weighs around 500 kg with a person inside and can transform from a bipedal stance, similar to the Power Loader from _Aliens_, to a four-legged mode for walking. Unitree emphasizes it as a civilian vehicle that should be used safely and responsibly. It’s unclear if it requires manual control or can operate autonomously in some situations.

The robot’s ability to switch modes appears limited, as the seating position doesn’t automatically adjust when it flips over. Passengers in such cases would need to manually reposition themselves. The presence of a cockpit with a racing-style seat suggests testing, but some clips show it performing tasks without a pilot inside.

Unitree is famous for viral videos of its humanoid robots doing martial arts, backflips, and sports, but this giant mech marks a new step. The company warns users against dangerous modifications or hazardous use, like attaching weapons or attempting risky experiments.

Currently, there are no clear commercial applications announced, but the technology opens possibilities for entertainment, exhibitions, or specialized tasks. The company plans to continue developing this line, and future versions could be more advanced or tailored to different needs.
