Starlink's current system is not designed to read the status of an externally connected battery via cable. Therefore, the appearance of a text string indicating the ability to "read the charge status of a battery" points directly to an integrated power cell within the device itself.
Although the Starlink Mini version significantly improved portability and use for travelers, the antenna still requires external power to function. While it consumes less than the standard version, it must always be connected to a power source, be it a high-voltage external battery or a camper van's power system.
The upcoming Starlink antenna might arrive with an integrated battery, allowing its use wherever and whenever desired.
If Starlink releases a version with an integrated battery, the service's utility could change completely. It would now be truly viable for excursions, for carrying in a backpack to get internet on a mountaintop, or for RVs that have limited autonomy from their external batteries.
Regarding the duration of this integrated battery, while it remains officially unknown, The Verge speculates that Starlink will include a 99 Wh cell. This capacity could offer approximately 5 hours of internet at a normal speed, a huge qualitative leap in autonomy.
The code also reveals that the system will have the capability to manage up to 3 distinct power modes. This would allow for extending battery life depending on user needs, optimizing consumption based on the bandwidth required at any given moment.
Currently, external batteries exist for the Starlink Mini version, but they are too expensive for the autonomy they offer and require carrying an extra, rather heavy gadget. An integrated cell in the device would save space and weight, making the experience much more convenient and efficient.
The ability to adjust consumption based on the required internet speed means that the lower the internet speed, the longer this battery-powered Starlink Mini could last. This flexibility is key to maximizing battery life, offering unprecedented control to users on the go.
