Chinese robot breaks half marathon record with astonishing speed
On April 19, 2026, in Beijing, Lightning, a humanoid robot, completed a half marathon in 50:26, surpassing human runners.

On April 19, 2026, in Beijing, a humanoid robot named Lightning achieved a historic milestone. It completed a half marathon in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, smashing the previous world record of 57:20 set by Jacob Kiplimo just a month earlier in Lisbon. Lightning finished 17 minutes ahead of the first human runner, proving that robots are now faster than humans in this race.
This event, called the Beijing E-Town Half Marathon and Humanoid Robot Half Marathon, marked a turning point. The first edition was a complete disaster, with only a third of the robots finishing and most being remotely controlled at slower speeds. This year, participation increased significantly, with most robots completing the race. Nearly half ran autonomously, and some even outpaced top human athletes.
Lightning stands 169 centimeters tall, weighs 45 kilograms, and was designed to handle complex terrains and high speeds. Its legs, about 95 centimeters long, mimic the stride of elite runners. It features a liquid cooling system inspired by Honor smartphones, helping it maintain peak performance. According to Du Xiaodi, the engineer leading the project, running faster not only pushes technological boundaries but also benefits structural reliability and industrial applications.
Of course, the race wasn’t without issues. Some robots collided with obstacles, one fell near the finish line, and others struggled with curves and uneven terrain. The event served as a testing ground for batteries, motors, and algorithms, highlighting both the potential and current limits of humanoid robots.
