World War Z 2 Confirmed: Paramount Revives Zombie Franchise at CinemaCon 2026
Paramount Pictures officially announced a "World War Z" sequel at CinemaCon 2026. This return, over a decade later, appears driven by the success of the franchise's video game.

Paramount Pictures officially confirmed a "World War Z" sequel at CinemaCon 2026, marking the return of the popular Brad Pitt-led zombie franchise. This announcement comes over a decade after the original film's release, positioning it as a key priority for the studio in the coming years.
The confirmation came during Paramount's presentation at CinemaCon, where other significant projects were also revealed. The audience learned about plans for "Top Gun 3", a new "Call of Duty" installment, and future films in the "Star Trek", "G.I. Joe", and "Transformers" sagas. These titles underscore the studio's strategy to heavily invest in its most successful franchises.
The revival of "World War Z" surprised many, given the long gap since the first movie. However, the massive success of the "World War Z" video game appears to have been a key factor in Paramount reviving the film franchise. This game, developed by Saber Interactive, captivated millions of players worldwide.
The massive success of the "World War Z" video game appears to have been a key factor in Paramount reviving the film franchise.
Tim Willits, development chief at Saber Interactive, the studio behind the acclaimed "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2", shared his perspective with IGN. Willits believes the video game's popularity, boasting over 30 million unique players, convinced Paramount executives. "30 million people have played that game. Isn't that crazy?" Willits exclaimed, though he clarified his theory was not directly confirmed by the studio.
"They have not told me this — I'll probably get in trouble!" Willits joked. "But maybe IGN put this on Instagram, that there's talk at Paramount about making another 'World War Z'. Again, they have not told me this, but I'm pretty sure it’s because of that game. I'm guessing!" he added, emphasizing his conviction about the video game's influence.
The first "World War Z" film, released in 2013, was a resounding commercial success. It grossed over $540 million worldwide, making it Brad Pitt's highest-grossing film at the time. Paramount confirmed plans for a sequel shortly after, but the project faced numerous hurdles.
Initially, Marc Foster, the director of the first installment, decided not to return for the sequel. Later, David Fincher joined the project, replacing J.A. Bayona in the director's chair. However, pre-production halted in 2019, reportedly due to budget issues and a lack of momentum, even though production was supposed to begin that same year.
In 2023, Fincher reflected on his scrapped "World War Z" sequel, comparing it to HBO's "The Last of Us" TV adaptation. The director expressed his gladness that his movie did not make it beyond pre-production. Fincher told GQ that there were notable similarities between his vision for the sequel and the HBO series, feeling that "The Last of Us" had "more real estate" to explore similar themes. Fincher even revealed his title sequence was going to use a small parasite, a central element in "The Last of Us" narrative.
