Sydney Sweeney's "Christy" Finds Massive Streaming Success After Box Office Flop
The boxing biopic starring Sydney Sweeney, which struggled in theaters, is now a top hit on HBO Max and Movistar Plus+.

"Christy", the biopic starring Sydney Sweeney, aimed to be a pivotal moment in her career but struggled to connect with audiences in theaters just a few months ago. However, this apparent box office disappointment has found a spectacular second life on streaming. Since its arrival on HBO Max in the United States on April 10 and Movistar Plus+ in Spain in late February, the film quickly became the service's most-watched title, showcasing the power of digital audiences. Streaming has offered a vital second chance to a film once deemed a box office disappointment.

Initial expectations for "Christy" were significant. It was envisioned as a challenging acting role for Sweeney, with some even suggesting a potential Oscar nomination. Yet, the reality proved very different upon the film's theatrical release. Its box office opening was modest, grossing just $1.2 million in its first weekend.
These low figures confirmed a harsh setback for the production. The film only remained in U.S. theaters for 14 days. By the end of its run, worldwide gross reached $2.3 million, a figure far from its $15 million budget. Critical reception was also mixed, earning 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, which did not help generate the necessary word-of-mouth.
What seemed like a painful chapter in Sweeney's career, comparable even to other titles like "Madame Web", dramatically shifted with its move to streaming. On April 10, "Christy" debuted on HBO Max in the United States. In just four days, the film rocketed to the number one spot among the service's most-watched titles. Audiences in Spain could already enjoy it on Movistar Plus+ since late February.
This resurgence on digital platforms is not an isolated event for the actress. Sydney Sweeney's fan base appears to be exploring her filmography with renewed interest. Perhaps the recent premiere of "Euphoria"'s third season motivated many viewers to seek out more of her work. In fact, her film "The Handmaid's Tale", a viral phenomenon in theaters a few months ago, is also dominating streaming.
"Christy" immerses us in the life of Christy Martin, a legendary figure in women's boxing. She was a true pioneer who, alongside controversial promoter Don King, broke barriers in a male-dominated sport. Martin became the first female boxer to appear on the cover of "Sports Illustrated", a historic milestone. The film explores her journey both inside and outside the ring, addressing challenges like domestic violence and discrimination based on her sexual identity.
