For nearly twenty years, superhero movies have dominated the film industry, with Marvel and DC bringing their characters from comics to the big screen. Recently, the idea of "superhero fatigue" gained traction, suggesting audiences are tired of the genre.

However, Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, has a different take. In an interview with The Associated Press, Safran clearly stated: "I never felt there was superhero fatigue. I felt there was fatigue with mediocre movies". To him, the issue isn't with the characters or genre, but with the quality of the films being released.

Safran emphasized that trying something new and changing the game is essential. He highlighted that the story of Supergirl, the upcoming DC movie, is innovative and original, unlike anything seen before in the genre. This film will be the second installment in James Gunn's new DCU, following the mid-2025 Superman reveal.

Regarding the release date, Supergirl is set to premiere in theaters on June 26, 2026. The film stars Milly Alcock as the lead, alongside a notable cast including Jason Momoa as Lobo. Momoa will be the first actor to appear in both the DCEU and DCU, marking a significant milestone for the franchise.

Safran made it clear that the real reason behind audience fatigue isn't the genre itself but the lack of innovation and quality in recent movies. Fans and viewers should stay tuned for upcoming announcements and news about the DC universe and other geek culture topics.

The problem isn't with the characters or the genre, but with the quality of the movies being released.
