Andy Serkis, famous for playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, announced that Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed Aragorn in the original films, supports Jamie Dornan's casting in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The news comes amid speculation about Mortensen possibly returning to his iconic role, though no official confirmation has been made.

Serkis, who will also direct the new film, shared in an interview that the cast is nearly set to begin shooting but preferred not to reveal too many details. When asked how Dornan was cast, he explained that the process is still ongoing and didn’t want to spoil the surprise, but confirmed Mortensen is in agreement with the decision.

"We’re very happy with Jamie in the role," Serkis said. "And, of course, Viggo is thrilled about it too."

The announcement caused some confusion among fans, as Mortensen had previously expressed interest in reprising his role in 2024. However, Serkis revealed that the recasting aims to tell a more intimate and psychological story of Aragorn, exploring a side of the character that has resonated deeply with audiences over the years.

Details about why Mortensen won't return remain undisclosed, but other actors like Kate Winslet and Lee Pace are confirmed for the project. The movie is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027, and fans are eager for more updates on this new chapter in Middle-earth.

The story will be deeper and focus on Aragorn’s psychology, connecting with new generations of fans.
